Predeterminado WoW: Wrath of the Lich King (Info)

It's official: The next World of WarCraft expansion is coming; it's called Wrath of the Lich King, and will open up the continent of Northrend to players of level 68 and above. This second expansion will focus on the return of Arthas Menethil, a.k.a. the Lich King, ruler of the Scourge, and one of the most powerful beings in all of Azeroth. This semi-sequel to the saga of Arthas (from WarCraft III: The Frozen Throne) is intended for experienced players with a couple level 70 characters in their pockets.

    Level Cap: 80
    Skill Cap: 450
    Continent: Northrend
Number of Zones: 10 (tentatively), for levels 68 and above
    Profession: Inscription
Class: Death Knight (first-ever Hero Class)
Features: Outdoor PVP zone with siege weapons and destructible buildings.
    Release Date: When it's done...

The biggest news for existing players is the introduction of the Death Knight, the first new class since WOW's launch -- and, coincidentally, its first Hero Class, too. Other big new features include the introduction of siege weapons and destroyable buildings in both a new Battleground and a brand-new outdoor PVP zone. What Wrath of the Lich King won't have is any content for new characters: no new races, no new level-1-to-20 zones back in the old world, and little change to the old world.

Here's what we know so far:

    The Story
Having cleaned up Outland (or at least having set things in decent enough order for now), the Alliance and Horde turn their heads northward to the continent of Northrend, where a terrible threat has gone unchecked for far too long: that of Lich King and his undead army, the Scourge. On the day Wrath of the Lich King launches, players will be able to set sail from various points in old Azeroth and join the fight against Arthas Menethil.

    New Continent: Northrend
Having learned a valuable lesson about funneling 8.5 million players into once single starting zone with The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King lets players pick a zone on either side of the continent to start from: Borean Tundra in the west or Howling Fjord in the east. Each zone has level-equivalent quests (appropriate for approximately level 68 through 72) and one Hellfire Peninsula-style instance hub with multiple dungeon wings for level 70 characters, level 80 characters, and raiders. While Northrend immediately calls to mind ice and snow, Blizzard doesn't want to make those themes dominate Northrend completely-expect as much variety as ever, only not quite as weird and wild as Outland.

Northrend's indigenous inhabitants include a Viking-like race called the Vrykul: 15-foot-tall humanoids with a strong Norse influence. Most Vrykul you encounter will be your enemies, as they've been in Northrend so long that the Lich King holds a lot of sway over them. Another friendly race -- the walrus-like Tuskarr -- will serve as a cute little counterpoint to the lumbering undead-loving oafs.

    New Zone Type: Outdoor PVP
One of Northrend's 10 new zones (final count still tentative) is an outdoor PVP zone that introduces the concept of siege weapons (Meat Wagons, Steam Tanks, etc.) and destructible buildings. Blizzard describes the outdoor zone as basically a "non-instanced Battleground" where completing objectives earns world-wide bonuses for your side (Think Spirit Shard buff in Auchindoun instances). The PVP zone is entirely avoidable (if you're the carebear type), and seige weapons won't be useable outside their designated PVP area.

    New Hero Class: Death Knight
World of WarCraft's first Hero Class is a plate-wearing tank/DPS hybrid that works a little something like this: When players hit level 80, they'll be able to embark on a quest (similar in difficulty to the Warlock's epic mount quest, back before the level cap was raised to 70) that unlocks the ability to create a Death Knight character. The Death Knight starts at a high level (somewhere around 60 or 70, though Blizzard isn't certain yet), so you won't have to grind your way back up all over again. It's intended as an alternative, advanced class for end-game use only.

Rather than using rage, energy, or mana, Death Knights have a special "rune sword" displayed beneath their health bar, onto which the player can etch six different runes (choose between Frost, Blood, and Unholy). Different abilities require different mixes of runes, and using abilities consumes the requisite runes until a cooldown timer causes them to be available again. Stuff like talents, spells, and other specifics are still being finalized. So are key questions like what races can be a Death Knight (start a Gnome petition now) and whether unlocking the Hero Class on one server means you can create a Death Knight on any server.

    New Profession: Inscription
Wrath of the Lich King will introduce a new profession called Inscription that will let players customize individual spells and abilities in their spell book -- to change the cooldown timer on a Fireball, for example, or alter the crit rate of a healing spell.

    New Spell:
    Unholy Embrace
    Instant Cast. 5 min cooldown.
Target is embraced by a silhouette of darkness for 6 seconds, corrupting any healing spells and effects cast upon or currently affecting the target to cause damage for 50% of their healing potential instead of restoring health. Any damage shields cast upon or currently affecting the target will also be instantly consumed, dealing 50% of their absorption potential in damage. Once afflicted with Unholy Embrace, the target cannot be afflicted with Unholy Embrace again for 1 minute.

    Changes since before TBC

    Druids

Bears tanking and cats killing. Wanted to make sure druids could be viable tanks or DPS in groups and raids.
    Not just a soloing spec.

Feral and Balance just don't mix. So planned for mixing with resto.

No matter what, you still want to heal sometimes.

    Hunter

Traps in combat and the reliance on Feign Death.

Pet scaling (holding aggro, tanking) -- allows for bonuses for the pet in all the important places.

Misdirection (group/raid utility). To add to group/raid utility instead of just DPS.

    Mage

DPS king (single target vs. AoE) -- so AoE king

Water Elemental as a talent -- so as not to be a fulltime pet class.

Spell Steal and Invisibility -- really odd things to break the mold with this class typically more than others.

    Paladin (lots of boos)

That's the same reaction as last time.

Horde playable -- more distinct from a shaman

Protection tanks, ret dps, holy healing (much laughter)

Few tweaks needed for tanking and applause for much more needed for ret dps.

Successful spec is for healing and tank. So trying to give ret a boost.

    Retribution itemization pitfalls.

    Priest (cheers)

Shadow Priest in PvE (damage, healing, mana battery)

Bring alternate specs to be more playable in PVE instead of just PVP.

The Holy Trinity (Circle of Healing, LOLWell and Spirit of Redemption, aka improved death) -- much laughter and applause.

Still struggling for those last two.

    Discipline Tree... what's the focus?

    Shaman (applause)

    Alliance playable

    Totems vs. Blessings.

The scaling problem (Arcanite Reaper and beyond) -- used to be feared and now hasn't scaled so well

    Rogue (much applause some boos)

Best single target DPS (much to mage's regret) -- for close range, though

Not enough utility so Improved Sap.

Swords vs. Daggers. Which should be the more damaging spec? Ongoing battle for balance.

"Stunlock" and increased health in Burning Crusade. You used to be able to die before leaving stunlock and if not then would kill the rogue even with head start. So now more fun.

    Warlocks (huge applause and boos)

    Pet scaling (Demonology)

Reliance on fear -- never ending struggle.

Best dueling class, but WoW isn't a dueling game. Stigma carries over into arena, even if not the strongest class.

Warrior (saved the best class for last)

Rage mechanic (fun vs. balance) - killing faster and pushing more buttons. Scales exceptionally well. Trimming that to the right place make the class less fun to play.

Best at what they do (with enough money for constant talent respecs). Looking into being more viable in different areas of the game.

Where is the room for the rogue if rogue can't wear plate but warrior does DPS.

*Northrend, the harsh, icy continent where the Lich King holds rule, complete with new zones, quests, items and monsters.
*New level cap of 80 providing access to mighty new powers and talents
*New battlegrounds featuring siege engine warfare and destructable buildings
*Expanding character customisation options including new hairstyles & dances, the ability to change the hairstyles of existing characters, and new skin color variants
    HELLYA!!

    Professions & Item Panel

Things we want to do more
Best in slot equipment (Give each profession a very good BoP item)
Create great leveling gear (Including in Northrend from 70 to 80)
Provide what's missing (Fill itemization gaps with crafts)

    Things to Improve
Engineering is gonna get some love
Transmute (Change the 24h cooldown into a daily cooldown)
Discoveries (They will make some easier to get, deviate delight would have been good as a discovery)
Vendor Recipes (will change the camping thing, make it random but not campable)

    Inscription
    Not Alchemy or Enchanting
Inscribe Spells and Abilities with additional power (Shadow bolt could do more damage, backstab could crit more, etc ...)
Create completely new type of items. (Too early in development to talk about it, but making spells more powerful is just one part of the Inscriptions)

Coming Soon (2.2 and 2.3 Patches)
    Professions daily quests
New Crafter-Only gear (more "best in slot" stuff, new jewelcrafter only gems, etc)
Smoothing out the progression (especially between 275 and 300)

New Enchant: Executioner (Drops in Zul'aman)
Use: Learn how to permanently enchant a Melee Weapon to occasionally ignore 840 of your ennemy's armor. Requires a level 35 or higher item.
The visual effect will be at least as cool as Mongoose

    New Gems
Shown a few gems that we already listed in this picture

    New Cooking Recipes
Melee hit food, spell crit food, storm chops (AoE damage when monsters get near you)

    =)

    Preguntas (Q) y respuestas (A) del panel:

Q: Plays a priest. Will Spirit be looked at as a stat?
A: Spirit is good for you please have some, but it doesn't make everyone happy. Looking at how to re introduce spirit to make it more desirable. Maybe add another aspect to it. Make it better for mana regen. Trying to fix for next expansion. (applause)

Q: In a massive raiding guild. Epic cloth piece of the wolf -- drop rate really high. Why? Since you play a warlock, is that why tier 6 has wings? (laughter)
A: The fact that of the wolf is on cloth is probably an oversight. Will look at that on Monday. (laughter and applause). I don't make the art for the warlock gear and that was done before I knew it was there. Now play a shaman to work on their itemization. Did the hunter thing and wanted to kill myself. (laughter and applause)

Q: Will rogues ever see elite thistle tea? Inscription system -- will switching to it mean having to do noob things to level up?
A: Inscription - haven't determined how it will work out. Been brainstorming how to make all professions easier to switch to for higher levels. Thistle tea? maybe... no.

Q: Death knight will have their own greens and own mount?
A: They will have their own mounts probably and will have own itemization as well as share the appropriate items.

    Q: Engineering?
A: Working on reducing the selfishness of Engineering profession.

Q: Leatherworking epic best in slot gear not as good as blacksmithing and tailoring best in slot gear.
A: Blacksmithing gets the weapons which are super sexy and look better than armor. In general, all best in slot gear can still be replaced by slightly better raid gear.

    Q: Moonkin gear?
A: There will be sets for Moonkin and Elemental Shamans in Zul'Aman. Also the help for the healers' dps will help the Moonkins.

    Q: DPS Warrior gear?
A: Every warrior needs some amount of tank gear, regardless of spec. Agility used to be nice but not anymore. Accidentally designed items for stats that became outdated. Zul'Aman will have full set gear for dps warriors.

Blizzcon 2007: Raid and Dungeon Panel and new information
Teleios posted on 3 Aug 2007 8:36 pm

Here at Blizzcon 2007, Blizzard held an excellent panel on raid and dungeons, lets the information spill. I attended the panel and jotted down some information of interest.

First the good stuff, because I know you are dying to know. So here are the highlights:

Possibly one new 5 man before next expansion.
KTM and Deadly Boss Mods built into game.
Ideas for an Item Rack functionality that has extra storage space for alternate sets of gear.
New 25 man before expansion that is higher level/better gear than Black Temple. It was hinted, but not confirmed that this could be related to Sunwell and Northrend.
Naxxramas could be redone as an introductory raid dungeon for Northrend to allow those who didn't get to see the fight a chance to see the fight.
Horde will be getting fear ward.
Healing Priest raid vitality is being looked at.
Possible guild based attunement or account based attunments.

Blizzard also spent quite a bit of time talking about their reasoning and thought processes behind encounters.

Ideas for raid and dungeon encounters typically come from:
    Lore - (Black Temple, Deadmines)
Fills a gameplay void - (Maraudon, Ragefire Chasm, Zul'Aman, Zul'Gurub)
    Geography - (Maraudon, Wailing Caverns)
    Metzen wants it (:D)

In general, Blizzard plans a lot more than they can launch with. For example, Dire Maul was originally a level 30 instance, but was taken out and later released at a level 60 instance after release. They expect change and are able to adapt.

They want more 10 man dungeons. Karazhan is the most played instance currently and they want to expand upon the interest there.

Things Blizzard takes into account when thinking about encounters:
    Level
    Difficulty
    Number of Players
    Should the instance be winged?

Progression! Here are things Blizzard thinks about when working on Progression:
    Challenge
    Sense of purpose
    Escalating Rewards
Attunements and keys (Karazhan and Heroic-type keys are good. Tempest Keep key, not quite as good.
    Possible guild/account based attunement.
Unlocking content. Expect more AQ-like server events.

Trash is in for a reason. It allows for individual classes to shine and allows for pacing. Don't expect trash to be going anywhere.

    Relating to trash:
Denisty - Gnomeragan, Hyjal Past, Karazhan Library, Scholomance, Shadowlabs, Underbog are all examples of where density has gone bad.
Killtime - Hit points, disruption, immunities - Examples of things that take too long to kill include (Defias Miner, Fel Overseer, Greyheart Technicians (suppossed to be AOE mobs), Mana Feeders, Boglords)
Difficulty - likelihood to kill, complexity, requires bosslike attention/skill. Failures here include (Anh'Qiraj Anubisath's, Defias Pillager, Molten Core Lava Packs, Anything post Twin Emperors in AQ, Karazhan Skeletal Ushers.
Respawn - adds a sense of urgency, can allow for unlimited tries on a boss, can often be coupled with the boss encounters. (Examples include: Stratholme respawned too fast, Razorgore has unlimited tries and no trash, Broodlord Lashlayer had trash that was considered to be part of the fight, Vaelastrasz had no trash, Skeram/Attumen type trash is the kind they are aiming for, Reliquary of Souls is similar to Broodlord Lashlayer)
Reward - gives money, items, rep, and a chance to progress. Hyjal trash will be giving Sands of Time Rep. Monstrous Kaliri will be getting loot and rep as well.

A lot of thought also goes into encounters. How many people are needed, what gear is expected (Onyxia Scale Cloak, Resist gear, Kael'Thas Weapons). What makes sense based on the lore? Ragnaros is obviously going to hit with fire and do big damage because he has a big hammer. Thaddius is going to have something electrical related to his fight because of the room he is in. How does the enounter fit overall?

A lot of it boils down to what is called "Math Problems". Can the player survive burst damage? This is what is called a gear check. Also fights can consist of dps/beating the clock checks. Examples include Patchwerk which is a tanking/healing check. Gruul which is a dps check.

Many fights have multiple phases and targets. Kael'Thas is a multiphase fight with multiple targets.

Movement and positioning can also add another element. Shade of Aran has 3 different movement phases, fire, frost, and arcane.

Black Morass adds a completely different type of instance mechanic.

Players must be able to assume individual responsibility. Encounters are designed to reward situational awareness and raid groups are only as strong as the weakest link. (Think Geddon, Heigan he Unclean)

All encounters have a random element to them. You can get lucky or you can get unlucky. The random element adds tension and drama and another dimension to the fights. Random, does not mean that they are unknown however, and they can be overcome with gear and other improvements like having gear or a specific strategy. Randomness can also favor a player (Think Prince in Karazhan).

Many fights are Endurance tests. These are typically long fights that increase the chance of mistakes and increase the chances to get unlucky. They also bring about issues of mana management. How to help endurance tests: great dps. Examples of endurance tests are the Illidari Council, Nightbane, and Illidan Stormrage.

Overall, summary of points made at the Raid and Dungeon Panel & Q/A at Blizzcon 2007
